Dental Crowns Are More Than Cosmetic

0

Dental crowns are not just for cosmetic purposes. A dental crown is used to restore or strengthen decayed or damaged teeth. Dental crowns are also used to anchor a dental bridge or as the final step in the dental implant process.

Dr. Craig. J Alexander may also recommend a dental crown if your tooth is discolored or oddly shaped.

What are Dental Crowns?

Also referred to as, “Caps,” dental crowns are custom made to fit over your tooth. This helps restore your tooth to its original size, shape, and appearance. Designed to encase the top of the tooth above the gum line, a dental crown strengthens the tooth making life much easier when you speak and chew.

What is the Dental Crown Process?

A dental crown requires two visits with the first involving a dental exam and tooth prep. A temporary crown will be placed while your permanent crown is being manufactured at the lab. Dr. Alexander cannot stress enough how important it is to look after your temporary crown.

  • Avoid chewy and sticky foods
  • Try not to chew on or near the crown
  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid hard foods such as raw veggies
  • Slide instead of lifting your dental floss

During your second visit, your East Greenbush dentist will place the permanent crown. Before placing the new dental crown, Dr. Alexander will check for accuracy, fit, and comfort before bonding into place. Once happy with the results, your new dental crown will be polished and ready to shine.
